In a recent press release on Saturday, the Fulani Youth Association of Nigeria (FUYAN) has criticized the ongoing detention of Alhaji Abdullahi Bello Bodejo, the President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, by the Nigerian Army. FUYAN deems the detention as illegal and a violation of fundamental human rights.

According to FUYAN’s Convener, Amb Mohammed Tasiu Suleiman, “The continued detention of Alhaji Bodejo without charge is a clear breach of our laws. The Nigerian Army, lacking the legal mandate, is unlawfully detaining a citizen.”

FUYAN underscores the constitutional mandate that only the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) possess the authority to detain citizens. The Army’s prolonged detention of Alhaji Bodejo contravenes the fundamental principles of justice and due process enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

The association has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene and secure the immediate release of Alhaji Bodejo. “The Nigerian Army’s actions constitute a flagrant disregard for the rule of law,” states Amb Mohammed Tasiu Suleiman. “We demand that Alhaji Bodejo be transferred to the appropriate authorities for lawful proceedings.”

Highlighting the legal framework, FUYAN emphasizes that under Nigerian law, no citizen can be detained beyond 24 hours without being charged in a court of law. The association’s legal team is preparing to challenge the unlawful detention and mobilizing members nationwide to protest this affront to justice.

“If there are allegations against Alhaji Bodejo, he must be accorded his constitutional rights and presented before a competent court,” declares Amb Mohammed Tasiu Suleiman. “The Nigerian security apparatus must uphold professionalism and respect for the rule of law.”

FUYAN appeals to the Fulbe community to remain peaceful and law-abiding as they await the release of their leader. The association remains committed to defending the rights of all citizens and ensuring justice prevails in Nigeria.
