The Labour Party in Ebonyi State, on Sunday, elected a candidate that would fly the party’s flag for next month’s bye-election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has slated February 3 for a by-election having declared the seat vacant following the resignation of Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works.

Okorie contested the Ebonyi South Senatorial District seat in 2023 and lost to Umahi, placing second in the keenly contested National Assembly election by four leading political parties in the zone; APC, LP, PDP and APGA.

In the primary election of the party for bye-election, Okorie who is a former House of Representatives member for Ohaozar/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency, emerged winner.

In a statement obtained by Daily Sun which gave details of the names of the Electoral Committee and signed by the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, the primary election was held at Amuro/Mgbom Community Primary School field, Afikpo- the headquarters of the Senatorial District.

Announcing the result, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Comrade Ayo Olorufemi said Okorie got 40 votes while Nwabueze Ogo Eze got 10 votes, then Fred Okereke secured seven votes.

The total valid votes according to the Electoral Committee, stood at 57 while there was no invalid vote.

The primary election was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Okorie immediately thanked his supporters within and outside the party, urging them to complete the good work they commenced February 25, last year, on February 3.
