Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, yesterday, called on journalists in the state to stick to the rules of the game in the coverage of the Edo State 2024 governorship election coming up on September 21.
Comrade Alenkhe who made the call soon after leading members of the union to embark on a road walk to herald the 2023 Press Week, reminded journalists in the state that the electorate were looking up to them for accurate reportage of events during the election.
Flanked by the secretary of the union, Comrade Andy Egbon and members of the 2023 Press Week Committee, led by its chairman, Comrade Efosa Uwangue, Comrade Alenkhe also urged journalists to endeavour to maintain their respect and dignity by reporting the truth no matter the situation they find themselves before, during and after the election.
Alenkhe who led members of the union to embarked on a road walk to herald the 2023 press week also said this year’s Press Week, titled “Unionism Development Drive: A Panacea For Democratic Advancement” is to appraise event of the outgoing year.
According to him, the rational behind the Press Week is to appraise event of the outgoing year
and to rekindle the journalists’ zeal for the pen profession and the rules governing the profession in general.
“Press Week is an annual event being celebrated by working journalists under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to create awareness.
“The week long event is also to bring journalists from different chapels together to brainstorm on how to improve the profession and their writing skills in the year ahead with series of activities on daily basis”.
This year’s event, he said commenced with a road walk by the Union members along major roads in Benin City, including Airport road, Sapele road, Vegetable market road, Ezoti Street among others.
The Edo NUJ chairman also led union members to visit some orphanage homes to present some items to the imates.
Among the orphanages visit by the union were Felicia Lily’s Shelter and Orphanage and Amadi Orphanage where noodles, toiletries, fruits and milk were presented to the homes as part of the Union’s way of making the less privilege have a sense of belonging.
Also speaking the secretary of the union, Comrade Andy Egbon and the chairman of the 2023 Press Week Committee, Comrade Efosa Uwangue, said they were impressed with the lined up of activities and urged members to endeavour to participate in all the programmes.
