House of Representatives Committee on Ports and Harbour, has expressed support for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the various ports and harbors, in the country, so that they can operate optimally.
Chairman, House Committee, on Ports and Harbour, Nnolim Nnaji, who stated this at a meeting of the committee, in Abuja, said the parliament is determination to ensure that, “the sector remains one of the best through appropriate legislation and oversight”.
Nnaji noted that the importance of the maritime sector to the country’s economy cannot be overemphasized. Consequently, he noted that the committee will collaborate with relevant agencies to harness the revenue potentials in the sector.
According to him, “we intend to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure that appropriate avenues are created for the economic development and better non-oil revenue generating sector as obtained in advanced country.”
The lawmaker, while stressing that ports are crucial to the country’s economy, stated their appointments into the committee ” presents all of us an ample time to effect challenges that will reshape this unique and high-tech sector and position it to strategically compete in the global stage”.
Nnaji, who expressed appreciation to the speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, for his support to the committee, appealed to stakeholders in the sector to cooperate with the parliamentary in the overall interest of the country.
He also solicited the support of members of the committee, urging them to submit proposals and suggestions to enable the secretariat develop appropriate work plan for the committees.
