Globally celebrated professor of African history, Toyin Falola, has restated Nigeria’s need for transformational values in attaining its desired greatness.
The intellectual giant made this known on Thursday while delivering a public lecture organized by the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Benue State University in celebrating of the university’s 30th anniversary.
In the lecture titled: “Benue State University at 30: Transformational Values”, Falola noted that “transformative ideals play a major part in the modern framework of Nigerian society as fundamental benchmarks that facilitate the trajectory towards a future replete with growth and intellectual illumination. The discourse surrounding these principles is rich in variety, with its beginnings anchored in psychological foundations that significantly influence individual behaviour. This discourse covers a wide range of topics, including human development, organizational frameworks, and transformative societal forces. The complexity contained in this discourse appears to incorporate the fluid shifts taking place within the Nigerian socio-cultural, economic, and political setting, presenting chances for long-term methods intertwined with a conscious pursuit of ecological and societal accountability.

Earlier in his speech, Falola submitted that transformational values have far-reaching impacts than expected. According to him, “transformative ideals are shaping narratives filled with notions of accountability, transparency, and participatory governance within the domains of politics and governance. The current environment is defined by a dynamic interplay between the younger generation, who embody the nation’s future, and their active participation in establishing a government framework that is distinguished not only by representation but also by inclusivity. This attempt seeks to foster an environment in which the importance of each individual’s point of view is recognized and cherished. In the midst of this profound transformative journey, it is critical to recognize the critical importance of education. Education, which is regarded as a formidable tool for effecting societal transformation, is undergoing a process of development, cultivating the capacity for discerning analysis and cultivating individuals who have not only a consciousness of their entitlements but also the ability to actively participate in shaping this narrative of change.
