Diego Simeone is one of the best and most well-known managers in football history. He has won many trophies, including the coveted Copa del Rey, UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup.

But he’s nurtured his global profile with his Atleti successes and his notoriously disciplined and aggressive defensive style. When people are using a bet builder for football matches, it’s likely they’ll be choosing low-shot totals, a low number of goals, and other bets that suggest a defence-first performance. While he has shifted his team towards a more possession-oriented approach, opening the team up in an attacking sense, Simeone’s effectiveness is best felt in his defensive organisation.

Who Is Diego Simeone

Diego Simeone retired from football and became the club’s head coach after his last game for Racing on February 17, 2006.

On May 18, 2006, he took over as head coach of Estudiantes and led them to their first title in 23 years, beating Boca Juniors 2-1 in the decisive final on December 13, 2006.

On December 15, 2007, Simeone was unveiled as River Plate’s new head coach, following the resignation of Daniel Passarella. In 2008, he led the team to the Clausura championship. Simeone resigned on November 7, 2008, after a disastrous start to the season that saw the team lose 11 games and drop to the bottom of Argentina’s Primera División, as well as an early elimination from the Copa Sudamericana by Mexico’s Chivas Guadalajara.

Short stints at San Lorenzo, Catania, Italy, and Racing followed. On December 23, 2011, Simeone was revealed as Atlético Madrid’s next head coach. On May 9, 2012, the club won the Europa League, beating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the final, and the UEFA Super Cup on August 31, defeating European champions Chelsea 4-1.

Management Style

There are a lot of football formations, that’s why it’s interesting to see Simeone’s style of management. He favours the 4-4-2 formation, which he first used as manager of Estudiantes de la Plata in 2006.

When the team is attacking, the two wingers go inside and operate as offensive midfielders, freeing up space for the fullbacks and enhancing attack fluidity. The defensive power required to win midfield skirmishes is provided by the two holding midfielders.

Simeone’s Estudiantes won the 2006 Apertura using this formation, defeating Boca Juniors 2-1 despite being down to 10 men in the first half. At Atlético Madrid for example, Simeone used a similar tactic. Simeone’s coaching inspirations include Marcelo Bielsa, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Alfio Basile, Victorio Spinetto, Luigi Simoni, Carlos Bilardo, and Radomir Anti.
