Legends Never Die, a solo, travelling exhibition by the artist, Olasukanmi Oyelusi, is currently showing online. Curated by Babatunde Olufon and organised by Ini Gallery, in partnership with Artsy, the exhibition started on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, and runs January 31st, 2025.
In his curatorial statement, Babatunde Olufon said: “Legends Never Die is a body of work made up of thirteen pieces that delves deep into the profound exploration of the immortality of humans through their legacies, which is particularly poignant in today’s rapidly changing world. As society grapples with the ephemeral nature of existence, this exhibit serves as a reminder of the lasting impact individuals can have on the world around them. By delving deep into the significance of the marks we leave on future generations, Legends Never Die challenges viewers to reflect on their own lives and the meaningful contributions they can make to society.
“Olasunkanmi’s artistic exploration of immortality combines his personal experiences and influential figures who have shaped his perspective on life and art. He spotlights iconic black individuals who have made significant contributions to society, not only paying tribute to their enduring legacies but also seeks to highlight the interconnectedness of culture, history, and human experience. In so doing, underscores the idea that our immortality is not only defined by our individual achievements but also by the ways in which we enrich and inspire the lives of others.
“This body of work not only prompts introspection but also celebrates the enduring power of art and culture to connect people across time and space. Through his visual storytelling and emotive expressions, he invites all to engage with the universal themes of politics, music, human rights, religion, public Health, gender equality, social and racial justice, arts, immigration. The exhibits are a catalyst for dialogue, inspiring individuals to consider the ways in which they can contribute to a more vibrant and interconnected global community.”
In all, Legends Never Die serves as a testament to the enduring influence of human existence. It ignites a sense of purpose and urgency to create a meaningful legacy that transcends time. Olasukanmi, in mastery of his visual language, reminds us that life is transient and urges us to leave a legacy that will stand the test of time.
