2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles battle Benin Republic again

• Drawn in Group D with Libya, Rwanda

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will have the chance to beat Benin Republic Cheetahs silly, after being drawn together in Group D for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which will take place in Morocco.

During the recent World Cup qualifier in Abidjan, the Cheetahs, led by former Super Eagles Franco-German coach, Gernot Rohr, surprised Nigeria by winning 2-1.

Yesterday in South Africa, the Confederation of African Football conducted the draw, placing the 3-time African champions in Pot 1.

In Group D, Nigeria will compete against Benin, Libya, and Rwanda. The top two teams from each group will progress to the AFCON finals, scheduled for December 2025.

This group presents a familiar challenge, as Nigeria will also face Benin and Rwanda in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Benin and Rwanda currently lead the World Cup qualifying group with 7 points each, having won two and drawn one of their first four matches.

Nigeria, meanwhile, have had a slower start, with three draws and one loss, leaving them four points behind the leaders.

The  Super Eagles’ only defeat in the campaign came from a 2-1 comeback by Benin, marking the Cheetah’s first-ever senior win over Nigeria in 15 matches.
